Volunteers and local military set out today to clear garbage from the beaches at Jibei (吉貝嶼) in Penghu to prepare for the height of tourist season, The Central News Agency reported.

As the islands that make up Penghu were recently named a must-see destination by Agoda on its 2015 Fresh Destination list, the government seeks to maintain its image for tourists, which includes cleaning up trash left behind by locals and tourists.

The efforts of volunteers removed 6000 kg of garbage from the beaches. The total clean-up included 2500 kg of general waste, 1500 kg of recyclables, and 2000 kg of driftwood.

It was recently announced that Four Points by Sheraton, the first international hotel in Penghu, will open in June after years of delays.
