While the Airport MRT has made getting to and from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport more convenient since it opened in 2017, there is still a need for additional public transportation between the city and Taipei. There are currently buses that run between Taoyuan and Shilin and Neihu districts in Taipei, but the public has requested more options.
Taoyuan is set to launch bus route 1662 on May 29 with 18 total stops. The route will connect the Taoyuan TRA railway station and Taipei Songshan Airport. The bus will also stop at Xintian Temple and Taoyuan Arts Center. Passengers can catch the bus behind the railway station.
Taoyuan Mayor Chen Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) said at a press conference on May 8 that the new bus route will make travel easier for residents and tourists between the two cities. He noted that there has been public demand for a Taipei bus route from Taoyuan Arts Center, and bus 1662 will address that need.
The trip between the two airports currently takes about 90 minutes with connections along the MRT. The new bus route would shorten the travel time to about an hour. The direct route will also be cheaper than taking the MRT or TRA, according to the Taoyuan Transportation Bureau.
There will be 25 total buses to operate along the route. It will make 160 total trips on weekdays between 5:40 am and 12:10 am, while operating every 10 to 15 minutes during peak hours. On weekends and holiday, the buses will run every 20 to 30 minutes between 5:40 am and 11:30 pm. Full fare tickets will cost NT$75.
