Following yesterday’s MRT construction accident in Taichung that left four dead and four more injured after a 209-ton steel girder collapsed, crushing a car, New Taipei Department of Transportation has implemented new safety measures for construction of the new Circle Line.

Steel for the construction of the MRT line can only be hoisted between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The roads around the construction areas will be closed during those times to avoid accidents. The overnight construction and road closures will reduce the risk from accidents and limit disruptions to traffic throughout the day.

There is speculation that the accident in Taichung was the result of contractors rushing to complete the job. Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung previously said that he wanted the MRT project completed sooner.
