Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊) ordered the evacuation of 61 residents last night as heavy rain raised the risk of landslides in mountainous areas of the city, CNA reported. An additional 1206 residents were alerted that they are also in high-risk areas and may be evacuated as well.
The Central Weather Bureau issued a red alert for parts of Kaohsiung and Chiayi counties and warned of possible flooding around western Taiwan in addition to the possibility of landslides, UDN reported. Affected areas include Taichung, Hsinchu, Penghu, and Kinmen.
Rainfall totals in the past day have reached as high as 176mm in parts of Kaohsiung.
