Police responded to reports of a public argument and found that a 42-year-old man surnamed Ou (歐) was murdered in Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District at around 6 am Friday over an alleged unpaid debt, Apple Daily reported.

The suspect in the murder, a 20-year-old man surnamed Chen (陳), has been taken into custody after surrendering to police. He initially fled the scene and was sought by authorities.

Police say that Chen used a watermelon knife to hack the victim on Baojing Street (保靖街). The victim died because the knife severed an artery in his left leg.

Ou reportedly was negotiating a debt of NT$30,000 (US$1000) when Chen attacked him with the knife. An ambulance was sent to the scene, but Ou died at the hospital.

Chen said that Ou had borrowed money because he was unemployed. The two had discussed repayment previously, but this time the discussion ended in violence.
