Yilan County and the Dongshan Township Farmers Association held their first organic tea quality assessment competition to name the region’s Organic Tea King (有機茶王), UDN reported.

The winner of the competition was 40-year-old Lin Liwei (林立偉) from Datong Township, who switched his family tea farm to organic eight years ago.

Between Dongshan, Sanxing, Datong and Jiaoxi Townships, there are 10 certified organic tea farms. In total they entered 25 varieties of tea for the competition. The winners for organic tea king, gold medal and high-quality certificates were chosen based on tea aroma, appearance, color and other conditions.

The gold medal went to Hsieh Chaoyang (謝朝陽) from Sanxing Township, with eight high-quality certificates being awarded. Dongshan Township came away with five of the high-quality awards.

Lin said that when he took over the family farm, he sought to obtain organic certification. He said that the process to obtain the certification took over two years. So, while he has been growing organic tea for eight years, it has only been certified for six.

Three years ago, Yilan County launched a campaign to promote organic farming in the region.
