A Taiwanese tea scam run by a 31-year-old man surnamed Ke defrauded 88 mainland Chinese after offering them free samples of Alishan tea. Taiwanese authorities in Taichung arrested Ke today along with 22 others suspected of being involved.

After obtaining the people’s info in exchange for the free tea samples, Ke’s partners pretended to be police who informed the victims that they had been identified for possibly money laundering. They told the victims to transfer money to a national monitoring account for safety reasons.

Ke and his accomplices took the victims for more than NT$10 million over six months.
