The Taipei International Lantern Festival for the Year of the Dog will kick off on February 24 between Beimen and Ximen MRT stations. The main activities will be centered in Ximending at the North Gate and Red House. The festivities will run until March 4.

Deputy Mayor Chen chin-chun unveiled the mini-lantern for the Year of the Dog at a press event on February 2. The first mini-lantern for the festival was introduced 12 years, also Year of the Dog. The mini-lantern can be folded from a single sheet of paper in ten minutes to form a puppy.

While last year’s nine-day event attracted 3 million visitors, the city hopes that this year’s festivities will be as successful, particularly as it significantly increased revenues for local businesses.

This year’s Lantern Festival theme is “Happiness GoGo.” The festival will work with cultural groups to offer vibrant activities to visitors, including flash mob activities. The city is set to unveil the festival’s main lantern soon.

Lantern Festival (元宵節) marks the end of Spring Festival and the Chinese New Year holiday. There are multiple celebrations across Taiwan for the holiday, though the festivities are staggered to allow visitors time to participate in each celebration. The main Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held in Chiayi on March 2.
