Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) promised in his campaign last year that 10,000 affordable housing units would be built in the city. Lin said today that the city could achieve a goal of 5000 units of affordable housing in the next four years, CNA reported.

Plans are ready to develop 3600 units in Taichung. The city, however, expects to have plans for all 10,000 housing units by year-end.

Mayor Lin is encouraging developers to build more affordable housing in the city to balance the rising real estate prices.

In a government survey, 77% of residents said that housing prices are too high; prices have increased 90% over the last 10 years. 20% of Taichung residents don’t own a house.
