6 Migrant Workers Trapped in Factory Fire

An early morning fire at a factory warehouse and dormitory in Taoyuan’s Luzhu District has sent five people to the hospital with burns and six people missing or trapped, Liberty Times reported.

The fire broke out in the warehouse on the first floor of a Sican Co., Ltd. (矽卡有限公司) at 2:09 am on Thursday and engulfed the second-floor dormitory as well. Five residents escaped but suffered burns; they were sent to three area hospitals. However, there were reports that another six migrant workers from Vietnam were still trapped inside the building, according to Apple Daily. In total, 11 Vietnamese workers were housed in the building.

As of 4:48 am, the fire department had dispatched 42 fire trucks and 99 firefighters to handle the blaze that engulfed about 1000 sqm of the factory area.

Founded in 1998, Sican produces PET films for window tinting and other uses.

Update: Authorities confirmed that all six missing Vietnamese workers died in the fire. The blaze was not contained until at 6 am.
